Doch der Reihe nach:
Am 28.2.2009 gelüstete es Bea nach einer Anhängeuhr. Locker an einer handgeflochtenen Lederkordel, in patinierendem Silber vor dem Bauchnabel baumelnd. Das Weiternutzen des settimana junior Werkes schien uns der logische Schritt zu sein. Ein Mehrfachnutzen für bereits Entwickeltes zu Erfüllen des Wunsches.
Eine Frauenuhr braucht einen eigenständigen Zeithorizont. Oechslin wählte dafür die etwa 29.5 Tage des Mondumlaufes um die Erde. Er konstruierte den Mond in die Anzeige der Wochentage - der erste Schritt.
Das Einstellen der richtigen Lunation auf den passenden Wochentag wäre bei der ersten Variante mit bis zu 200 Zeigerumdrehungen einzustellen - das schien uns zu umständlich. Somit zielte das Hauptaugenmerk auf die richtige Angabe des Mondes, die 7er Einteilung der Tage wurden nur noch angedeutet - der zweite Schritt.
Eine Scheibe dreht unter dem messingfarbenen Zentrum und zeigt die wahre Grösse des Mondes an. Der Stundenzeiger markiert die Richtung der Sonne. Die Position von Sonne und Mond am Himmel sind korrekt angezeigt. Vollmond (im Bild) ist wenn sich der Mond in der exakten Verlängerung des Stundenzeiger befindet und den ganzen Lochkreis ausfüllt. Leermond wenn sich die Öffnung mit einer dunklen Scheibe unter dem Stundenzeiger befindet. Die astronomisch korrekte Mondphase - der dritte Schritt.
Der Mond hat, wie wir manchmal fühlen, auch so seinen Einfluss auf unsere Befindlichkeiten, Reizbarkeiten und Stimmungen. Oechslin experimentierte mit einer Anzeige, welche neben dem Mond einen Zeitabschnitt um die 30 Tage einstellen lässt - der umgehend verworfene vierte Schritt.

On 28 February 2009 Bea mentioned she'd love a fob watch. A patinated silver one that hung from a long hand-braided leather necklace all the way down to her belly button. It made sense to base the idea on the same calibre as that of the settimana junior – the proven ETA 2824. We liked the idea of getting as much out of the movement as possible.
Ludwig Oechslin was thinking ahead, though: every ochs und junior model has one or more features which are unique to it – they incorporate one or more technical or aesthetic innovations which none of the other watches has. Ludwig works quickly, precisely and profoundly. The ochs und junior Moon watches are the outcome of an eight-step process…
Ludwig Oechslin jedoch dachte weiter: Jede Uhr von ochs und junior hat ein eigenständiges Profil. Sie hat eine technische oder ästhetische Neuentwicklung in sich. Das Konzept ist nur in der jeweiligen Uhr anwendbar. Oechslin entwickelt schnell, präzise und mit Tiefsinn. Die ochs und junior Monduhren resultieren aus einem Prozess entstanden in acht Schritten...
A ladies' watch needs its own time horizon. Ludwig chose that of a lunar orbit (a "lunation"), which is around 29.5 days. He incorporated the moon into the weekday indicator – step 1.
Setting the correct lunation on the appropriate weekday on this early prototype required anything up to 200 rotations of the hands – not very practical! Attention therefore shifted to indicating the correct phase of the moon; the seven-way division of the days was only hinted at – step 2.
A disk turns beneath the brass-coloured centre and indicates the true size of the moon. The hour hand indicates the direction of the sun. The position of sun and moon in the sky are correctly displayed. The full moon (as shows) occurs when the moon is exactly in line with the hour hand and fills the aperture. The new moon occurs when the hour hand is exactly on top of the empty aperture. Step 3 – the astronomically correct moon phase.
We sometimes feel that the moon influences the way we feel, our moods. Ludwig experimented with a display that showed the moon phase as well as a user-settable segment of the 30 days. However this fourth step was soon rejected.
This fifth step is visually similar to the preceding one, with the moon moving within a sickle-shaped aperture in the titanium case of the settimana junior. And because the ETA 2824 powers a date indicator, Ludwig leveraged it for this prototype.

A date sporting digits? Of course not! ochs und junior displays the date using a dot and its position in apertures. And then came the challenge: the date disk in version five was set too deep to allow the dot to be seen through its apertures. The design had to be more compact at the centre – here's how it came out at first in step 6.
Ein Datum mit Zahlen? Natürlich nicht! ochs und junior zeigt dieses mit Punkten und deren Position an. Also nun kam sie die Herausforderung: Die Datumsscheibe der fünften Version war zu tief positioniert für Punkte. Die ganze Konstruktion musste im Zentrum kompakter werden - die erste Umsetzung dazu: Der sechste Schritt.

Ludwig's expertise in astronomy – we're making this 39 mm watch in short runs in titanium and silver. The three dial discs are in white gold, two of which are heat-patinated – the date disk is left in its natural state for contrast. That is the seventh step – one more to go…

We're also making this one in a 36 mm case without date or 39 mm with the characteristic orange dot date indicator.
This model is a development of the third prototype (see above) and encompasses a new way of displaying the date.
